Free tool for UK roofers

Free roofing quote generator

Type or say the job and your price, the way you'd tell a mate. Jottle writes the scope of works and lays it out as a proper quote your customer can read on their phone. Download it as a PDF. No sign-up.

It only ever uses your price. Leave it out and it asks you for one: it never makes a price up.

Say what you'd do, what with, and your price. Add the customer's name and address if you like. Talk like you would on site: Jottle tidies it up.

Your words are sent to write the quote and aren't kept. How we handle them.

Your quote

This is the actual quote page Jottle sends: your customer opens it on their phone, picks any options, and accepts and signs it there. Here you can download it as a PDF.

Your quote shows here once it's written.

What goes on a roofing quote

  • Your business name, phone, email and address, and a quote number and date.
  • The customer's name and the address of the job.
  • The scope of works, in plain words: what's stripped and taken away, what goes back on (tiles or slates, membrane, battens, ridge, leadwork), and the scaffold.
  • What isn't included. Anything you might find once the roof is open, such as rotten rafters or boarding, should say it will be checked and priced first, not that it's included.
  • The price, and whether VAT is on top. A homeowner should see the total they'll pay, VAT included.
  • How you want paying: on completion, a deposit, or stage payments.
  • How long the work takes, and how long the quote is valid.
  • Your guarantee, if you give one: how long, and what it covers.

Quote or estimate?

A quote is a fixed price for the work you've described. If the customer accepts it and the job doesn't change, that's what they pay. An estimate is your best guess, and the final bill can be different. Homeowners comparing roofers want quotes, and a clear written one wins more work than a figure on the back of a card.

If part of the job can't be priced until you see it, like the amount of rotten fascia or the number of slipped tiles, give a rate instead: "£85 a metre, measured on the day". Say that in the tool and the quote shows it as a rate, not as part of the fixed price.

An example

Stour Valley Roofing types: "Full re-roof for Mrs Patel, 22 Orchard Way. Strip the old concrete tiles, new breathable membrane and battens, Marley Modern tiles, dry ridge. Scaffold front and back. 7,800 plus VAT, about 5 days, 10 year guarantee, 30 percent deposit and the rest on completion."

The quote comes back with a title, a short note to Mrs Patel, and the work set out in clear numbered stages from the scaffold to the new ridge. The price is £7,800 with the VAT shown on top, paid as a 30% deposit and 70% on completion, with about 5 days on site and a 10 year guarantee. Every price and promise came from what was typed. Nothing that costs money is added that wasn't said.

Your customer's right to cancel

When a homeowner agrees to a job away from your premises, say at their kitchen table, over the phone or online, they usually have 14 days to cancel. If they aren't told about that right, it can run for up to 12 months, and they may not have to pay for work already done if they cancel. The quote page this tool makes includes the government's model cancellation wording, and an optional box for the customer to ask you to start sooner.

Do you need building regulations approval?

Usually not for repairs or re-covering a small part of a roof. You normally do if you re-cover 25% or more of the roof, which can also mean bringing the insulation up to standard, or if you make structural changes or use a new covering that's 15% or more heavier. Check with building control, or use a competent person scheme that can sign the work off.

Questions

Is it free?

Yes. No sign-up and no card. You can write up to 8 quotes a day.

Will it price the job for me?

No. It only uses the price you give, so the quote is always yours. In the Jottle app you can set your rates once and it prices each quote from them.

Can I talk instead of typing?

Yes. Tap "Say it instead", talk for up to three minutes, then tap stop. What you said appears in the box so you can change it and write it again.

What happens to what I type?

It's sent to write the quote and isn't stored. Your business details stay on this device, and only if you leave "Remember my details" ticked.

Is this legal advice?

No. It helps you write a clear quote. If you're unsure about building regulations, VAT or a contract, check with building control or an adviser.
